I had one for a while because they pulled a tooth out and the teeth around it started to close in together so the new tooth couldn't grow in. I don't remember it ever being painful.The only time there was even slight pain was when something happened and one of the wires came loose and there was metal contraptions hanging out of my mouth poking my tongue and gums and we had to do an emergency dentist appointment at like 10 at night to get it removed so I the metal wires wouldn't poke my mouth.

Actually, it doesn't hurt at all :] I have one and it just feels a bit akward because it presses against your gum...
