Elvis Presley - Raised On Rock

Recorded: 1973/07/23, first released on single
(Words & Music: Mark James)

Lyrics:
I remember as a child I used to hear
Music that they played Lord with a feel'
Some call it folk, some call it soul
People let me tell you it was rock and roll

I was raised on rock, I got rhythm in my soul
Every day when I got home I turned on my radio

Listening to the music that my idols made
I knew every single record the DJ's played
A honky tonk a Hound Dog, a Johnny B. Goode
Chain Gang, Love Is Strange, Knock On Wood

I was raised on rock, I got rhythm in my soul
I was born to love the beat I was made for rock and roll

I thought it was a fad, thought that it would pass
But the younger generation knew it would last
Time's gone by, the beat goes on
But every time I hear it Lord it takes me home

I was raised on rock, I got rhythm in my soul
Every day when I got home I turned on my radio

Mother played recordings of Beethoven's Fifth
Mozart's sonatas down the classical Liszt
My papa loved to listen to his country songs
While I was in the back room rockin' on

I was raised on rock, I got rhythm in my soul
I was born to love the beat I was made for rock and roll

I was raised on rock, I got rhythm in my soul
I was born to love the beat I was made for rock and roll
I was raised on rock, I got rhythm in my soul

  • I completely agree. The songs from his movies were just fluff,...as were the movies. Once again this goes back to Col. Parker. He had Elvis cranking out those bullshit movies (and generating cash which the Col. got 50% of !) He was not allowed to grow as an artist and given songs worthy of his talent. People around the world love Elvis but his legacy could be so much more meaningful if he had chosen (or been given) better songs (and acting roles).

  • @stlrockn Elvis was so good but I wish he would have been given good songs to record. Some of the songs from the 60's and 70's just were not that good..I think his Promised land album and Elvis Today were his best in the 70's.

  • @MetalYarick89 elvis had to have others write his songs, he just sings them.

  • Elvis'one big hit in the Vegas years, his last one, was Suspicious Minds.I've met Scotty Moore & James Burton and run into DJ Fontana regularly at my local Walmert (really!)They and all of the others you mentioned were legendary players but they were SIDEMEN.

Elvis never got to venture into any great collaborations because Col Parker was a controlling

asshole and Elvis didn't have the balls to tell him to back off. Parker took half the money

and wouldn't let Elvis grow as an artist.

  • @stlrockn I don't need a lecture about the white jumpsuit cartoon character! Elvis recorded far more great music in his Vegas years than you ever will! Jam with rock's great musicians? How about Scotty Moore, Bill Black, D.J. Fontana, Hank Garland, James Burton, Ronnie Tutt, Jerry Scheff, Glenn Hardin...to name a few. Maybe not household names like Hendrix, SRV, Jimmy Page, et al, but some of the best rockers to ever play! And let's not forget Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny

  • @MetalYarick89 couldnt agree with u more

  • @Leroyfis tom jones r u serious he is nowhere near as well known all over the world as the king, please king of singers elvis ALONE!!!!

  • @Cindy8789 First of all.....NOT a girl. Second, I have forgotten more about RocknRoll

than you will ever know. I was Rockin' before your Mama met your Daddy. (Yeah, I'm that old). I am the Rock Historian at The Musician's Hall of Fame in Nashville. I saw Elvis 3 times. Proud to say I did, but he was a shell of what he was when he first hit. Sadly, he was a Vegas lounge act at the end. He deserved better because he was a great talent.

The music business (and Col Parker) screwed him badly

  • @stlrockn Jus sayin' , ELVIS is and will always be the KING OF ROCK AND ROLL !!!! Learn some history there dear girl !!!

  • awesome
