  • I am old enough to remember the other shows of the early 50s..... William Bendix as Chester Riley... a total idiot, Stu Irwin, a bumbling incompetent, Jim Backus in I married Joan , always a fool. The characters in Amos and Andy, even the scheming Kingfish come off with a greater dignity and humanity than those white guys.

These shows out a lot of Black people to work in a tine of discrimination... The only people hurt by the removal of these shows were Black people.

  • I watched this religously as a kid...It was taken off because the NAACP claimed it was racist and demaning to the African American community..I totally disagreed with this analogy..This comedy , of course was very comical..but it also had stories were there were Black Doctors, Black Lawyers, Black Pharmacists, Black Accountants, Black Judges as well as Professionals in other areas..These entertainers set the way for other Black entertainers to achieve success in movies and television.

  • This was slapstick humor and for its time, aside from the mangled English language and silly antics, it showed Black ppl in different regular occupations. this was pre segregation so this existed in many Black communities--having their own businesses.Their settings seemed lower middle class, not ghetto or poverty strickern like the Honeymooners. But the NAACP stepped in and got them cancelled.

  • A time when black people had a sense of humor. Only bad if you slant it that way.

  • What creative acting!

  • I watched at 530 am in the morning In Houston Texas during the summer break and I would for hours think these actors were comedy geniuses it was my secret I shared with noone today I am a stand-up comic I still marvel at these great artists I refer to them as artists with great affection!

  • The show was funny and still is. Lots of sitcoms had main characters mangle the English language- the Goldbergs, Archie Bunker, Tony Danza, etc. and remember- these characters in Amos 'n' Andy had much better furniture than the Honeymooners, so what's with all the racial stereotyping accusations? They also had a car.

This show was about funny life situations and the way known characters react to them. I think Situation Comedy is the industry term. Bottom line- it's either funny or it isn't.

  • I always enjoyed Amos and Andy. This show reminde of the 70's show Sanford and Son.

  • @lnefouse I felt the same way! there were many professional Black people in the shows.

  • (cont'd) just like the blaxploitation movies in the 1970's.....just like when the CW network and FOX network were starting. They'll create our characters, write what they want us to say, tell us what to do in order to schmooze....and when they're tired, they'll toss us like a cheap whore. ASIANS and INDIA (Bollywood) on the other hand, will build and MAKE people flock to THEM. So, people can talk about a "race card", but to ignore a group who believes they're CHOSEN over others? PLEASE!

  • (cont'd) No dis to working-class Caucasians, but I'm so sick of those who control the Hollywood machine (since its inception) pushing what THEY think the African-American experience is. And whatever's the most emasculated, crazy, or buffoonish.....that's the MOST promoted and award-winning. Yes, I know and studied the history of this show and the doors it opened, but can anyone say "OSCAR MICHEAUX" ?? Asians will close ranks and self-build. But Af. Americans jump at every, limited opportunity

  • (cont'd) Out of all the Caucasian tribes, Jews suffer from self-aggrandizement, the most. Sort of like when the priests wanted to "save" the wretched souls of the Indians, but wanted to pretend they were so different from the invaders with guns. BOTH segments were brainwashing, and pushing their own sneaky agenda. Afterwards, African-Americans began to copy these stereotypes with THEIR OWN shows, because---psychologically---the seed was already planted. No dis to working-class whites.
