Installed 52mm Defi White Racer boost and oil pressure gauges in my 2005 Subaru Legacy GT. Here's what the opening ceremony looks like during the night. Matches the stock gauge cluster pretty well!
I messed up starting the car when I stopped for a second with the key at ignition 1 (accessories on) instead of just turning it all the way to crank the motor. That made the gauges flicker more than it should because they did the startup twice.
It's only supposed to flicker a little bit. Also, there are different lines of Defi gauges. The Defi *Link* gauges have a different opening ceremony than the ones I have, which are Defi *Racer* gauges (which do not require the controller and are basic)
If you look at the Defi site (google for "Defi gauges"), they show animations of the startup sequences on each of their pages.
I love these gauges so far. Near perfect match for the stock dash, and they respond quickly. No problems at all so far!

Why do they flicker like that? I notice it in some but not in others.
Do you like them so far?
Thanks!
