Dr. Amir Abdullah draws Blood from Chickens

This is a video of me drawing blood from a live chicken, which is one of the many cool things I get to do in my animal science classes here in South Africa. The blood samples are collected in these special tubes that separate the blood contents (cells and serum). Once separated (serum on top and cells on bottom), we'll then be able to take them to the lab for a further analysis. More specifically, we can perform an antibody count of the serum. This information is vital within the world of animal science, especially when it comes down to properly vaccinating animals.

part of my animal health class was to draw blood from these chickens every month. I had to get used to pulling out those feathers. but don't worry, the chickens were never in any real pain during this process.
