Whether putting an explicitly modern spin on the classics (Rite of Spring, 2002 Next Wave) or creating blazingly original works, choreographer Angelin Preljocaj challenges conventional ideas about form and content. Last at BAM with Near Life Experience (2004 Next Wave), he explored the human capacity for intense sensation and detachment that transcends the corporeal.

This season at BAM, Preljocaj returns to earth with Empty moves (parts I & II), revealing the body's remarkable facility for nuanced line, clarity, and form—with each phrase building organically upon the last. Accompanied by excerpts from John Cage's enigmatic Empty Words (recorded at a 1977 performance in Milan which includes boos and jeering from the audience), the dancers move with concentrated grace and force, echoing the unwavering calm of Cage's voice.

BAM 2010 Next Wave Festival is part of Diverse Voices at BAM sponsored by Time Warner.
