Used UART on a ATmega16 to print the stars directly from the MCU; corresponding to the ADC input. The ADC input is given by a potentiometer. The stars only print when the potentiometer is rotated. Sometimes it prints because of the noise in these cheap potentiometers I think...

The output is shown in hyperterminal on COM port with baud 9600. Customised stdout stream on avr-gcc did the trick of printing characters on hyperterminal. It was pretty easy to use. Found the trick in sparkfun.com tutorial. Thanks Nathan!

P.S. Used MAX232 for interfacing with the serial port RS232...
