Borobudur sunrise

Sunrise from Borobudur Stupa looking towards Mt Merapi & Mt Merbabu. Merapi is one of the most active volcanoes of recent times & frequently smoke & lava can be seen coming from it's peak. Borobudur is an ancient Buddhist stupa which was buried for several centuries & uncovered again in the 19th century. It's original name is thought to have been "Bhūmi Sambhāra Bhudhāra" which in Sanskrit means "The mountain of combined virtues of the ten stages of Boddhisattvahood". It is again becoming the focus of Buddhist religious rites as the locals celebrate Vesak Festival with a procession from Mendut Temple to Pawon Temple to Borobudur Stupa. Also other Buddhists have been visiting on pilgrimage & to hold festivals & meditation retreats there.

If you stay at the Manohara Hotel you can book a ticket there for the early morning sunrise tour. There is a group goes each morning from the lobby of the hotel. I was very pleased with the service at the Manohara. It's only 3 star but it's 3 good stars. In some other countries 3 star hotels are not the same class as the 2 I stayed in in Indonesia. They were very good & the environment & gardens beautiful & clean, not like the streets outside.

I was shocked the last time i went to visit Borobudur. Everywhere it is written to respect the statues of the Buddha, not to climb on them. They are made of sandstone, so easy to erode. They were covered with kids posing for their parents to make photos. Muslims respect nothing, and the guards were yawning!
