It's the final week of FIRST WIVES CLUB, The New Musical.

Divas Harris and Ralph go down memory lane - HERS - as they revisit the Act I closer of Dreamgirls, which originally starred Ralph as Deena Jones. Sheryl Lee gives a bit of insight into Sam's "inner black woman" as they belt it out with the help of cast member Kevyn Morrow (also a Dreamgirls alum!)

Stand back! It's all over!

Sam closes the video with a live rehearsal clip of "I Am Changing".

"I Am Changing" is a song from the second act of the long-running Broadway musical Dreamgirls. Written by Henry Krieger and Tom Eyen, the song was performed by the character Effie White, originally portrayed on Broadway by Jennifer Holliday.

"I Am Changing" tells the story of a woman who wants to leave behind the mistakes of her past and "change my life"—she sings, "I need you, I need a hand" and "I need a friend to help me start all over again". After the unexpected success of Holliday's first single, "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going", "I Am Changing" was released as the second single from the Dreamgirls cast album.

However, the song didn't perform as well as "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going", peaking at #22 on Billboard's Black Singles Chart and failing to chart on Billboard's Pop Singles Chart.

"I Am Changing" has been covered several times. Lillias White (Starred along with Sam Harris in THE LIFE), who was Holliday's original understudy, has performed the song in concert. Jennifer Hudson performs the song as Effie White in the 2006 DreamWorks/Paramount Dreamgirls motion picture adaptation.

The song was performed by Bianca Ryan on the first season of NBC's America's Got Talent, a reality show which Ryan became the winner of that year. The eleven-year-old's performance of "I Am Changing" prompted show judge (and onetime teen star) Brandy to shake her head and proclaim that Ryan "makes me want to go practice that's how good you are."

  • Was there an issue with your mic, or were you simply holding back tonight? The sound design did not do your pipes justice.

If and when the show hits New York, Sara Chase might as well clear her mantle for her Tony. She is amazing. Just sayin'!

  • And yes, Sara Chase is brilliant. Strangely, most people don't know she is playing all 3 women until the very end. Which baffles me. It is such a clever theatrical device - something that the theatre can provide that you don't get in other medium. And it is also so metaphoric. She is comic gold! I love her!

  • I wish they had written the recording studio into the book as the space that becomes the Center. In the film, the Center was almost the fourth woman, it was Cynthia reborn. In the stage version, it should be a "space" the audience has come to know as well. Since we only see the warehouse in the end of the second act, it is forced and rushed. The recording studio is mentioned in the first act and we see it early in the second, and therefore, the audience has become familiar with the locale.

  • I was. And am. it's so much fun to play and to play with these people. 5 left...
