Emmett Miller, Minstrel Math

The legendary Emmett Miller performs a skit with F.E. Miller involving math.
Emmett ran a jazz band called the Georgia Crackers that included jazz greats like Eddie Lang, Gene Krupa and the Dorsey Bros. He introduced several classic songs like Lovesick Blues, Anytime, and I Ain't Got No Body.
This is a short excerpt from a movie called "Yes Sir, Mr. Bones" that also featured Scatman Carothers.

To put this in context, it should be remembered that nearly all identifiable minority groups were lampooned in Vaudeville. Italians, Irish or anyone else arriving in large numbers. This show even featured an Irish tenor.

Only the "interlocutor" ( usually addressed as "Mr. Jim") was seen as intelligent and in control, presenting the rest as if they were his children, putting on a show.

Try ebay, like I did. Search for: "Showtime USA", "Yes sir, Mr. Bones", "Square Dance Jubilee", "Kit Parker". This movie didn't even mention Emmett on the showbill! I've never heard of the "stars" they DO mention, except Scatman, Cowboy Copas and Spade Cooley. (Cooley went to prison for a long stretch for stomping his wife to death in front of his teen-aged daughter!)

We are doing this skit in our black history month show at school and I have Emmet Miller's part and the director told me to make the character seem as dumb as possible. I am black in a mostly white school district (Westerville) and I didn't feel comfortable with it and they explain the history of Minstrel skits and their main goal so now I understand I am helpin people!
