Did I mention that I love sea caves?
Well I do,and this is one of the best.Head out of Boscastle in a north-east direction, hugging the coast, and just before Pentargon cove,is a little inlet containing this Tardis of caves.I don't know exactly but it's no more than a mile, and because of it's position it is out of the main direction of swell.
A sense of foreboding occurs as you enter and realise that this is no ordinary cave, and you begin to wonder how far in it reaches.50,75 100metres I dont know but I suspect the latter. At 1min 37 I set out for the entrance and dont stop,so judge for yourself.I didn't paddle fast,or slow, just a steady pace and didn't edit any of that bit to give you the chance to see. At the extremity is a small sand beach and below mid-water,and sufficiently calm water you could land,I probably could have but didn't want to chance it,there were seals loitering, and sleeping as well. This coast is peppered with caves, but this was by far the deepest I saw,but I didn't see all of them and some were inaccessible because of swell,so I will have to go back and do it all again sometime, strictly in the name of research though!

  • I was worried about you in there lad! Could quite easily imagine the tide coming back in and flooding the cave before you find the exit or discovering the exit is too narrow! Do you have an idea of the length and width of these caves before you enter? I guess you must know what the tide is doing too?

    Great videos, thanks for posting.

  • @kawasakigt550 Ha ha,thanks for the concern, but don't worry I might be daft, but I'm not silly! A cycle of tide takes just over 6hrs,so that isn't a concern, plus the tidal range here isn't that great so it would be impossible to get trapped in there. The main worry is the swell,as a big swell enters an increasingly confined area such as this,it magnifies the effect and that could be hazordous, but the swell wasn't reaching that far - remember "Up there for thinking - down there for dancing!

  • Wow!! I love sea caves too, please could you give me an idea of where this cave is on a O/S map?? Thank you! Aimi

  • @warrenaimi Typically,I have map 200,and Boscastle isn't on! But no worries it's very easy to find, just hug the coast, heading North from Boscastle and you can't miss it,its just around the first inlet you come to,I'm guessing but probably half a mile maybe a bit more,The next bit is called Pentargon cove, there is a small waterfall,if you reach here you've gone too far.Check out my Boscastle - Tintagel video,Pentargon is the first shingle beach I land on.The whole area is superb!
