Video of "Fairy Frenzy," a game I worked on with a team for the UC Irvine Video Game Developers Club Game Jam, Spring 2011. I was responsible for producing, game design, and effects art. This video demonstrates some player attacks I created through UnrealScript editing. The particle systems are a mix of UDK examples I edited slightly and systems I learned to create while working on this project.
I've been working a little on updating the attack behaviors and their particles after the Game Jam. With the homing beam, I was trying to create the feeling of how the D&D spell "magic missile" might feel in a first-person-shooter. With the ricochet beam, I was trying to create the feeling of "Gemini Laser" from "Mega Man."
The character is supposed to be a creature of shadow magic, so many of the earlier particle effects didn't feel dark enough. This version replaces those particle effects with "dark energy" versions with a lot of black in them. The dark energy look was inspired by similar attacks used by characters in various comics and anime, like the Ragna Blade from "Slayers."
