James Kalm visits the opening of Joan Mitchell's "Works on Paper 1956-1992" at Cheim & Read Gallery. This exhibition in collaboration with the Joan Mitchell Foundation presents a comprehensive overview of the artist's drawings and works on paper. As one of the few women painters who emerged during the formative years of the "New York School" Mitchell established a style that was a transitional step from Abstract Expressionism to "Abstract Impressionism". Cameo appearances by Bill Jensen and Margrit Lewczuk

  • i like joan mitchell..but hate this video

  • Maxfield Parrish said it best when he commented, "Abstract-Expressionist art is 75% explanation, and 25% I don't know what."

  • I like Joan Mitchell. I don't think she is overrated. On the contrary, I think she is underrated and only now getting her due.Her paintings from the 50's and 60's are some of the greatest of post-war US art (paint handling, light, colors).

  • what an absolute thrill - thank you for being so kind to share with us

  • There is some good work here though I don't think think all of this is her best. I must say though that her best work is, in my humble opinion, on a par with the very best of the New York School. The work I refer to is her larger oils on canvas.

  • 7:30 and 7:45 are so awesome

  • what may seem like random color and meaningless swishes to one may be meaningful and moving to another. when you understand that you'll understand art. there is no standard, no blueprint only expression and the appreciation of it. it all comes down to taste at a personal level and as soon as you create a standard for "good" abstraction you miss the whole point.

  • ....and..............yawn.

  • No. There is good abstraction. Just not Mitchell. Really, if you cannot see that her random color and meaningless swishes of the brush are bad, then you are in a morass of some sort. It is getting to the point that vocal proponents of this kind of thing are the minority. It carries about the same weight as space alien abductions and acupuncture.

There really is great art to enjoy. Mitchell is overrated, to say the least. And spending millions on it is immoral.

  • artworldpirate......."The point is that no one can distinguish Mitchell....animals." What were you saying about insulting someone? It is not 'nasty' for me to disagree with you. You are consistently presumptive in your opinions, you don't know what i like. It is you who is acting like a religious fundamentalist, spending your time (ON MANY ABSTRACT ART VIDEOS) telling everyone they are idiots for liking Abstraction. Your statements speak for themselves:)
