Former Libertarian presidential candidate Bob Barr agrees with "torture memo" author John Yoo that a wartime president can assume extraordinary powers, but argues laws must be in place to expressly limit that power. "We should never go down...that slippery slope of a President saying he is above the law."

James Madison and the original Federalists, where are they when we need them?

Bob Barr argues that a tremendous and dangerous growth of government has taken place in recent decades. He points to what he says is the unprecedented power of the executive branch, the growth of federal laws and regulations, and the massive levels of federal spending, all as evidence that it's time for the country to look back on the writings of James Madison and the original Federalists and to benefit from their wisdom. - Commonwealth Club of California

Robert L. Barr, Jr. is an attorney and a former member of the United States House of Representatives from Georgia. Barr represented the 7th District of Georgia, from 1995 to 2003. Barr is now a Life Member of, and on the National Committee for, the United States Libertarian Party.

  • obviously the majority of you are......YAHOOS!!! Listen to the words out of Bob Barrs' mouth. Can you not see, or do you not care that he is talking about Big Brother monitoring us by allowing him a foothold into our homes & lives under the guise of anti-terrorism. Don't make this personal against Bob Barr, JUST LISTEN TO WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT!!!!! I care about freedom & I am John Galt.

  • @AggressiveAtheist Correction: They have both had the same policy for the last decade.

  • He's not above the law.....let's just write laws that allow the president to do whatever he pleases.

That's the message that I got from this.

  • I was just wondering if you thought otherwise. Since you brought up Republicans and Democrats for some obscure reason.

  • Your point being?

  • You do realize that Bob is not a republican, right?

  • babar

  • Correction: Republican presidents are above the law. Democratic presidents are never above the law.

  • listening issue ? or you base your judgement on the first phrase snippet without listening to the whole video ?
