The black community is not fragmented; that's just propaganda. Which black have you seen turned aside another black? And if you have (like some might assume a black preacher may turn aside a black homosexual) would you see similar circumstances if the same social constructs were applied to those of another* race? If so, then you can easily see that it's propaganda.
*(for example, if the roles I stated were filled by whites instead of blacks)
@celebdiur Yes, James functioned within the context of a black community that was not nearly as fragmented as we have today. Therefore, his focus was the comprehensive black community; not black gays, nor black feminism, nor classism, nor colorism, nor other black ethnicities and immigrants within the black community. The collective identity of the black community was rather simple then. Ironically, in some ways segregation facilitated a high degree of collaboration amomg "negroes."
If only we had more people like James; willing to be the intermediate in the mist of darkness and conflicts within social justice system. His words open hearts, raises hope for a chance for possible solutions within in clear passionate discernment; He inspires progress vs indifference and ego centralism. "James" could bring light to any conflict.
(If their was a roster for that job. I would t love to make that list!)
This is wonderful. I believe that if ratings were enabled, you would be positively surprised (The reason for disabling them was for fear of negative ratings, no?)
at least, I sure hope the ratings would be positive, for no matter the struggle, this man is an inspiration.
i haven't even heard the entire interview & i know it will enrich my spirit as baldwin has always done. thank u for posting this interview. IN ADVANCE!!!

Ironic he often says "it's difficult to describe..." yet he lucidly and artisticly describes what he means beautifully. Much respect.
