A musical tour of the historic Bronx, once home to famous jazz and latin clubs where all the greats played back in the day. We check out the site of the famous club 845, now a storefront church, the St Margaret Church attended by Colin Powell in his youth, the famous overhead train and the Prospect Avenue stop, site of another famous club, as well as the landmark Casa Amadeo. I thought it was closed- but thanks to Miguel Amadeo Jr, found out this landmark is still going strong! Hooray! Our guide is jazz historian Maxine Gordon, widow of jazz great Dexter Gordon. The famous Notorious PhD (aka Dr. Mark Naison) was our driver. Video shot and arranged by Dawn Russell to the music of Tito Puente. For the Bronx African History Project at Fordham University.

  • My Old block Prospect and 161st....wao

  • The EL train line here (New Yorkers still call it the Subway, above or below ground) is serviced by the #2 and #5 trains. The lines split up at 180th street with the #2 line going north and the #5 heading northeast. Even back in the 70s when the Bronx was in rough shape, it was neat that so many conveniences (Churches, grocery stores, clothing stores, pharmacies, restaurants, toy stores, libraries, banks, public transportation were always near by. One could get by ok without owning a car.

  • What Tito jam is that?

  • Wow, vids like these make me so sentimental. I lives here in the 60s & 70s, yet it feels like yesterday. So many fond memories of cruising with my family in our 68 LeMans or on the subway and those GMC Fishbowl style buses. I admit, that on this vid the Bronx looks so much cleaner now! The Cuban Club on Prospect Avenue, south of the station so often played music like this. Right next to that Colony Chicken used to be Cordero's Pharmacy. Warm, friendly people back in the day. Thanks for this!

  • Cool ride around the Bronx. Nice ending with Mr. Amadeo!

  • Thanks for the Great ride around the South Bronx! Up 149th st. down Westchester Ave. under the L Train (2, 4 & 5 Trains). And ending the ride at Casa Amadeo Record Shop! (786 Prospect Ave.) Thanks for everything!

    Miguel Amadeo Jr. (Jacksonville, FL)
