how did you ignite it? was there some kind of spark plug on that shaft you put the bottle on?

We pretty much shorted a car battery across a thin piece of wire that was mounted on the shaft.

I don't know why you removed the cap with plastic over your hand, but static electricity is enough to ignite this extremely volatile gas.
