A custom model for the indie game "Overgrowth" by developer Wolfire (http://www.youtube.com/user/WolfireGames), model and video made by me.

Model was made using Autodesk Maya, xNormal (for normal and occlusion maps), Autodesk Mudbox, Photoshop CS5.

Music: Overgrowth - Across the Dark Lands

---

Hopefully I'll be able to get the model animated and "alive" in the game in the future, but due to the lack of documentation and the use of Blender in Overgrowth it has proved to be harder than I had expected. I spent several weekends and days trying to adapt a rig to this model, but it has been way too difficult due to the game's fairly amazing ragdoll requirements.
However, I believe once animated it's going to look pretty amazing.

The model you see is just the foundation to make something more akin to the old concept art I made a year ago, but it will probably just work fine for a "beast" character that does not really care much about being civilized. Quite suitable for the modding community.

For the work in progress thread on Wolfire's forum you (regrettably) need to buy the game to gain access to the modding subforum. But once I get the model rigged and animated I should be able to create another video showing it off as well. Right now the project is on hiatus, waiting for better documentation.

  • no animation whatsoever? keep working dude

  • @delpher32exe Harder than you might think. I know quite well how to rig and animate in Maya, but Overgrowth uses Blender and requires a quite complex skeleton for all the procedural animation and ragdolling. I have tried my best to modify a current rig but since the proportions are so different I have to make a completely new one. And thus far there's no documentation on how to do just that.

I'll probably animate it in Maya just for fun, but it won't work for Overgrowth.

  • @AndrigeEU

can you rig it and animate in maya then convert to a file blender supports? or am i just beinf stupid?

  • @Jamman88888 No that's a reasonable assumption you're doing here, it's possible in most cases since both programs supports .fbx-format (which can handle skeletal animations).

However the impression that I get is that Overgrowth is quite specifically made with Blender in mind, so I'm not sure it's possible to get it working in-game that way. I could look into it, but it's highly unlikely that it will produce results. And right now, I'm very busy :S

That bring the bare necessities of life!"

Yes, this was the first thing that came to mind.

  • Great over all, but the form of the skull looks more like a lion/tiger

  • Wolfire should post a freakin tutorial for riggin in Blender so more people will get into it like this fella.. The more model implemented the better this game will get!! That's what OG needs!!(Still dreaming bout Orcs n Elves in this engine lol) Props 2 AndrigeEU for the bear model it's great.. That's the kind of fans Overgrowth needs!! Dun give up on ur model try n animate it!!!

  • @AndrigeEU

The Black Eyes are nice, seems more "bearish". The Red Brown are also nice but he looks like an evil bear of some sort (Still Cool, but not really good for a "default" mode), however it does seem to change when it's in the game, looks good in Maya. Can't wait for the rigging!

  • @AndrigeEU well, david might do it himself, since he already liked it

  • @AndrigeEU Valid points, true, but since the game is still in Alpha and - for all we / I know - doesn't have a developed story yet, I don't think incorporating bears into a story would be too difficult (Hmm, there was an Arena, no?).

As well, I would think any fan that makes mods like these would LOVE to see their work get implemented into a game for any price. I'm sure Wolfire would be interested in at least considering the possibility... maybe?

  • A little bit stubby, but extremely awesome
