I am not even a big john lennon fan (as oppose to some of you here) but this song is great. I love the bitterness of it.

@braclo93 Well said

Looking at the lyrics, I can't help but wonder if John is speaking to Paul. The stranger could be Yoko and he's wondering why he's playing solo instead of in the Beatles, where he truly belongs.

@MrAtishraja This is one of my favorite covers in the history of rock. It's so full of tenderness!

Yoko looks really beautiful on the cover of Double Fantasy.

@chingchangchongfly I know what you mean. have you heard the version with Cheap Trick ?
I like it better.

@chingchangchongfly i think perhaps you misread what i was saying, i wasnt trying to offend you, i just misunderstood where you were coming from, im very used to people considering terrific songs like this as "light" i agree that it would have given it a cool edge if he had sung it with more grit, i heard a cool demo version somewhere where the guitar was really fuzzed out and blood thirsty, i dont remember where though

@Squibfire I don't know who you think you're writing to, but I did not say it was a ballad. I said it was sung like a ballad. And yes, I'm fully aware that Lennon sang some magnificent ballads. My point was that the guitar should grind and hiss, distort, and Lennon should scream the last verse like his voice is being shredded by a wire brush.
did he really say john lennon... overrated? chapman should have shot you
