Let's not get defensive. The Benaras of today does not follow the Vedic ways - for instance Hindus are only meant to take a holy dip while chanting mantras, not brush their teeth and smear themselves with mud and spit into the water! Cattle are not supposed to be found floating - nor dead bodies, Only the ash is to be immersed. Benaras has become a travesty and has disgraced its origins! Look at the loud evening pujas on the river - disturbing the peace of those who come to honour their dead!
