Quorum and Sherwin Williams go SILVER.

Sherwin Williams in Sachse, Texas (designed by Quorum Architects, Inc.) has obtained a prestigious LEED Silver Certification.
So what is so special about this building?

1) It was built on a Brownfield Site -- meaning (in this case) a contaminated site which was previously occupied by a gas station which left hazardous oil-based products behind after demolition.
2) Alternative Transportation Parking (like alternative fueled vehicles and car pool vehicles) receive special, reserved parking.
3) Heat Island Effect -- Roof/Paving: A light colored roof and paving were selected to reflect the heat.
4) Light Pollution Reduction -- the parking lighting was designed by Quorum to shine where it is needed and not on the neighbors.
5) Water Efficient Landscaping -- plants are hardy and locally naturalized; water irrigation is used to deliver water to those plants instead of evaporating into the sky.
6) Water Use Reduction -- the plumbing fixtures in this building are low-flow and designed to reduce water consumption by 30 percent.
7) Optimize Energy Performance -- the building was designed to reduce energy consumption by 20 percent. The lighting includes energy efficient fixtures and skylights, and the light switches in the restrooms turn themselves off automatically.
8) Green Power -- the electricity for this building is supplied by a company that uses power generated from wind turbines.
9) Construction Waste Management -- by sorting out the scrap concrete, sheetrock, metal, plastics, paper and even the old metal underground gasoline storage tanks, the contractor, HCI Construction, was able to reduce the amount of landfill waste by 89 percent!
10) Recycled Content -- at least 25 percent of the building is constructed of recycled materials.
11) Regional Materials -- 66 percent of the materials in this building were manufactured and traveled no more than 500 miles from the site.
