President Kennedy Challenges NASA to Go to the Moon
In an address to Congress on "Urgent National Needs" on May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy called for America to send astronauts to the moon and return him safely to Earth before the end of the decade.

En su famoso discurso sus palabras fueron: We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard ("Nosotros decidimos ir a la Luna. Decidimos ir a la Luna en esta década y hacer otras cosas, no porque sean fáciles, sino porque son difíciles").

La urgencia de Estados Unidos por llevar al hombre a la Luna en su competencia con la URSS, llevó a muchos a pensar en lo que se conoce como el alunizaje, para muchos un mito y para otros una verdad confirmada.
