Air Crash Investigation - Mid-Air Collision (S02E06)

Bashkirian Airlines Flight 2937 was a Tupolev Tu-154M passenger jet en route from Moscow to Barcelona. DHL Flight 611, registration A9C-DHL, was a Boeing 757-23APF cargo jet flying from Bergamo, Italy, to Brussels, Belgium. The two aircraft collided in mid-air on 1 July 2002, at 21:35 (UTC) over the towns of Owingen and Überlingen in Germany, (near Lake Constance), killing all 71 aboard both aircraft. The German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Investigation (BFU) determined on 19 May 2004, that the accident had been caused by problems within the Swiss air traffic control system in charge and problems with the use of the collision warning system.

On 24 February 2004, Peter Nielsen, the controller who was on duty at the time of the accident, was stabbed to death by Vitaly Kaloyev who had lost his wife and two children in the accident.

Anyone blaming the Controller is just wrong -- in an environment where half his systems are down, where he has no back-up, and his management has left him out on a limb without proper support he was all but guaranteed to make a mistake. NO human being can ever be 100% perfect and he was put into a prime position to fail. What he needed was the right support and working systems to allow him to manage things properly, but he didn't get it. You can't blame a human being for not being perfect.

why nelson didnt called the other controller when the pressure was on is the break so important , how did he thought he could handle two screens and with the maintenance work goin on , fuck the international rule preventing the controller who saw conflict on his screen to contact the pilots r the rules so important above saving people

@mustang91798 Made even worst by the fact that his mudered blatanly lied.. got jail but was released due to popular pressure from his town and when he got out he was received as a hero and given a public position..

You always do what TCAS, not air traffic control, tells you. TCAS is right there. ATC is (hopefully) a lot further away.
