We now take a ride over the entire 1.7 miles of the Silver Creek & Stephenson Railroad. I am sitting on the rear platform of a wooden 1889 caboose that was built for the Hannibal & St. Joe. It is the oldest caboose in the state of Illinois.
This trackage was re-laid by the club in 1985 over the abandoned row-of-way of the Milwaukee Road's "Southwestern" line, which once ran through Beloit, Wisconsin to Racine, where it connected up with the mainline to Milwaukee. South of Freeport, it ran to Kittredge, where it connected up with the Savanna mainline. It was removed around 1981.
This ride begins at the depot and ends just short of Yellow Creek. Note the pile of coal, semaphore, and various structures along the line, which are used for the Halloween event.
