There is a form of tinnitus - called pulsatile tinnitus - which may be what you are describing. If you google the term "pulsatile tinnitus" you can learn more - and in many cases this type of tinnitus is caused by vascular issues and can be treated. There is also a great website and facebook group called "whooshers" which is specific to pulsatile tinnitus. Remember that a trip to the ENT/Audiologist is always highly recommended! We hope this helps you out!

I've been having this pulse noise in my ear. I've noticed it before but lately, it's starting to get on my nerves. I'm wondering if it is tinnitus or not

In terms of finding relief - ATA also has a sound mixer on their web site where people can customize sounds that work for them. You can export the file to an MP3 right from your computer too if you find it helps.

Mine started on October 6, 2012. I had enough anxiety and stress beforehand...

Hhmmm..its weird but like...I always thought the ringing to be just the normal sound that silence has and..I am never aware of it of bothered by it at all..i. I don't know if I'm the only one but if I go about my day to day activities or sit in a silent or noisy room I feel just fine, but if I FOCUS of the silence... THEN I start to hear the ringing but its not painful n it goes way when I stop focusing on it... is this the same as tinnitus or am I crazy?

Completely agree. I've had tinnitus since the late 90's caused by a blow to the ear (which at the time knocked me over due to its effect on my middle ear). I believed my life was ruined, obsessing over this noise in my head, my brain continually switched onto listening mode and emotional cascades of a lost silent paradise... it will change. Your brain will adapt, the noise will fade, just like not feeling the chair you are sitting on. You will learn to love life again. Be strong. Big Love

I have tinnitus since now more than 4 years. Believe me when I say, that I really had suicide thoughts.

The first two/three months have been hell on Earth. I couldn't sleep, couldn't concentrate and was always in a bad mood.

BUT, now here is something which is 100% true: You will get used to it. It will not bother you anymore. You will actually MISS it sometimes when you do not hear it.

I've been DOWN, but if you are strong enough, you will get back UP, I know that now.

My father in law who is an engineering major in the Air force, one day at work stood behind a jet engine and the pilot did not know about it so he fired up the engine which blew right into my father in laws left ear. He landed in the hospital for a month and his hearing was replaced with tinnitus. I myself have occasional tinnitus in various stages from being a musician for more than 15 years. Thank you for sharing your story Mr. Shatner.

40% of tinnitus in adults is caused by use of benzo's and glutamatergic damage from over active glutamate in the brain. Also vets are given XANAX for PTSD by the VA which also causes tinnitus.

I would like to add a personal observation to my former comment: when I open my mouth really wide (vertically ofc), I perceive the same high pitch noise as I otherwise would, only the noise is stronger.
