Pathanpara is a remote village in the hills of Kannur district in Kerala. Until 2002 the village had no access to the electricity grid. In 1997, Anil and Samuel floated the idea of producing their own electricity. A record 4 months later, with their help a microhydro system of 5KW (electricity generation using the force of small streams falling down a height) was built, along with an improvised micro-grid to distribute the power. It was financed by the community through contributions of money, labour and land. It is since then owned and operated by a "Peoples Electricity Committee" and continues to operate despite the grid having come in.
