I am very excited to introduce to you a ninety minutes Ballet created with the intention to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the independence of Chile to be held September, 2010. Let me invite you to celebrate with me the culture of Chile.
Chiloe is an island located in the beautiful and mysterious south of Chile, where rain, forests, stunning lakes and darkness lives among the powerful and joyful people. These conditions of extreme beauty, darkness and solitude allow the island to have a rich variety of myths and legends. I took these stories and made them into a three acts ballet. The first act is the creation of the island; the second act shows the dark forces of the night which leads to the morning beauty romance and love of the third and last act. Let me introduce to you the myths and legends of Chiloe.
Caicavilu, the serpent in charge of the protection of the seas and its creatures, awaken by the misbehavior of humans destroyed the land with powerful tsunamis that converted the south of Chile in hundreds of miniature islands. However, Tentevilu, who is Caivavilus brother and protector of the land and its creatures, raised the grounds with powerful earthquakes converting the land in one of the tallest mountains of the world, The Andes.
Many years ago, when I was still in first grade, I met a friend of my family that came from Chiloe to visit us. My family prohibited my sister and me to mention in front of the guest the name of the most evil creature of Chiloe, El Trauco; Son of Caicavilu, and the most known, powerful and frightening goblin in Chiloe. This monster frequently rapes young and mid-age women during their sleep and vanished when his job is done. Our visitor from Chiloe was said to be one of Traucos many victims.
However, we were not prohibited to mention the romantic story of La Huenchula with El LoboMarino. These two characters met at a lake and fell in love at their first sight. Their child became the most beautiful woman in the world, whose naked morning dance brings the fish to the coast as food for the people. El LoboMarino comes at the end of the ballet as the glorious captain of the most famous legend of Chiloe, El Caleuche; a magnificent and brilliant ghost boat that takes the good souls of the dead fishermen and makes them members of its crew. Our guest from Chiloe lost her father at the sea; I would have loved to have asked her about El Caleuche, maybe her family was not only a victim of the evil forces of the island, but maybe was one of the chosen ones to be part to the most wonderful mythical creation of Chiloe, the great mysterious ghost boat, El Caleuche.
