Actually this is a common valve configuration for hit and miss engines. All one has to do is set the cold valve lash to about 20-30 thou and it is set to run. Myrick was a small company in NY which made a lot of strange engines over their short existence from ~1903-1920. They made thousands of the 4 HP vertical engine under the Myrick, Myrick-Luther and later Luther badges. The 6 HP engine is far less common.
That thing has a rather peculiar looking exhaust valve. Must be a chore to adjust, isn't it?
