Fantasia after J.S. Bach (1909)

According to Francis Pott:

"Busoni described the Fantasia 'as a major concert work ... (one of my best)'... Three separate organ compositions are woven into the Fantasia, being transformed after the general fashion of a Lisztian operatic paraphrase. However, the harmonic atmosphere of Liszt's two late compositions entitled La Lugubre Gondola (I and II) strikingly pervades an episode early in the work... This passage is followed in due course by an arrangement of the Bach chorale setting Christ, der du bist der helle Tag, after which Busoni fashions variations on the chorale using as a model Bach's Chorale Partita, BWV766. Later still comes a free 're-invention' of the Fughetta founded by Bach upon Gottes Sohn ist kommen, BWV703. Of particular significance throughout is a recurrent device consisting simply of three repeated notes or chords, identifiable from earlier works by Busoni as a 'death motif.' Busoni wrote to his frail and aged mother that this music was 'from the heart and all those who have heard it were moved to tears'."

@dreampoets actually, it is both an arangment and an original composition. Busoni took three of Bach's chorale preludes and combined them into this magnificant piece.
