@stig781 To correct you, many RN ships were Dutch and French built. Taking rather than burning was encouraged hence Prize money for crews if a ship was sold back into the service. The Surprise is itself French built in the books you haven't read.

There is a bit of truth to the scenario in this movie. There's a scene where a couple sailors talk of the Acheron being built in Boston.
Lord Nelson once quote....." I see trouble for England in those big Yankee Frigates".....referring to the great strides American shipwrights made in naval technology and hull design. American builders could also afford to use lavish amounts of tough, seasoned oak, where the English builders could not. All this would later be evident in the War of 1812.
