The Eastern Hog Nose has a very specific diet. The hognose snake is one of a very short list of creatures that can and will actually a toad frog. Most books on the subject of keeping the Eastern Hog Nose as a pest will, with good reason strongly discourage the endeavor. Finding a live frog is not always possible especially in the winter months. Western Hognose snakes are much easier to train to eat small mice or better yet pinkies but the Easter will rarely if ever eat anything other than frogs. I have trained mine to eat frog legs which can usually be purchased in the frozen seafood section of many supermarkets. I will normally use a sharp knife to split the frozen pair of frogs and then allow one of the legs to completely thaw before presenting it to the snake. By using tongs I am able to give the frog leg a lifelike hopping motion and she takes it right away. This way, feeding my eastern hognose snake is fun and safe. This video is neat because it not only shows the snake pursuing the prey but it also shows the limited resources that the toad has for escaping the snake. Notice how the toad is puffed up and tries to tilt to the side the snake is on in an effort to make it harder for the hognose to get it's lower jaw underneath.

  • that frog seems a bit to big, did he ever eat it

  • That toad was little big and he did not eat it that day. I removed it and kept it for a in another container. She did wind up eating it on another occasion though.

  • @SuperBOWSKILL Actually, you're wrong, moron. They are rear-fanged, but they have no venom glands. Just because they have fangs doesn't mean they are venomous. Venom does not come out of their fangs, their fangs are solid. Their saliva is dangerous to small prey animals. And a bite from almost any creature could be fatal (if you're allergic to it)

  • @SilverDragon5432266 I have a hognose and it is most certainly a venomous snake. It can't kill me (more like a bee sting) but could if you were allergic to it. and yes it is venom not some bacteria in its saliva or some shit, its a rear fanged snake and them venom comes out of them.

  • @punkmonkey61 No, they're not. Their saliva is moderately toxic to small prey. That is not venomous.

  • @SilverDragon5432266 Ya they are
