The Skycraft Scout is thought to be the world's first commercial ultralight aircraft. Created by Ron Wheeler, the Mk 1 was sold with an engine derived from Victa Lawnmowers. Later versions adopted the Fuji Robin engine. Hundreds of lightweight Australians in the 1970's learned to fly with this simple aircraft and it's very brief instructional handbook.

  • Congratulations. HOW GOOD TO HAVE A SCOUT AS A NEIGHBOUR. I am out of town for perhaps a month. My email address is phardy-atkins@bigpond.com Within reason the machine cannot be far out of theoretical trim but it might still be optimised. This will depend entirely on your own weight. I do not think I have ever see a cockpit max load figure but having seen the old Vicat system I am inclined to think that things would get very interesting when pilot weight exceeded 12 stone but I dont really know

  • I hold almost all the documentation provided with this aircraft when new. I can and will make copies for other Scout-ers but they will not be available until September,

    Best wishes, the Birdman.

  • WooHoo! Pete! Awesome! I am impressed!

  • @Eatherbreather These are a very special aircraft and there must be dozens of them tucked away in garages all around Australia. Mine cost me a total of $700. With good weather conditions they are one of the safest thrills in the air.

    Best wishes

    Peter

  • The scout was too big and powerful and fast for me, so now I'm flying a foot launched powered paraglider........:)

at least my new aircraft fits in the boot of my car. :)

  • @birdmantelly Thanks for keeping a Scout in the air...! When I was 17, I became the (3rd) owner of the 3rd Preproduction-Prototype; with the last "Pixie Minor" engine, based on the 8 Hp Victa 160... The 12 Production Mk 1s had the 12 Hp "Pixie Major" based on the Victa 180. I don't own it now, but was the last to fly it, in Nov. '78, at Bowral. It hangs at the Inverell Transport Museum, these days.

  • One of these just sold on eBay last week for $1,375.00!!

Has to be a museum piece these days, without an engine they fly like a brick.

  • i have just braut a scout from a fella in perth with orange and white wing tips and a fuji robin engine, ime looking around for any parts and some airspeed and mtow figures for it,manual is a bit vague, i hope to have it flying soon as its in prity good nick and runs well, but it will be 100% before it leaves the ground, i have some pics on face book( andrew graham) and i hope to have some vids of it up soon regards andrew, albany wa

  • Good on you mate !

Nice to see someone out there is still flying the scout in 2010

I owned one of these in 1984 with orange and white wing tips powered by the 18hp robin engine.

Pity about carburetor flying off all the time LOL really needed a rotax 377 in it place.

Ive been looking to buy an old one on ebay but there's nothing much around anymore.

    Cheers Steve
