Gilles Villeneuve - Piece by Piece

This is my tribute to the great Gilles Villeneuve. Like Senna he was a magician behind the wheel and like Graham Hill he was extremely popular. Gilles sprung to fame after beating a number of drivers in a race. The whole of Europe sat up and took notice of this shy and fearless little French-Canadian.

Many people blame Pironi for his death, other blame his sometimes reckless driving style. However, all I know is he was a talented driver and could have been a world champion many times over.

'Show me a hero and I will write you a tragedy.'

I dedicate this to the honourable Gilles.

He was NOT like Senna. Please stop comparing Senna to him. Senna was ultra-aggressive defending position and often used dirty tactics. Gilles always gave room.

I agree but behind the wheel he was something special. Much like Senna he only knew how to win going as fast as he could unlike say Prost.

Gilles was a very hard racer, but the comment that most impressed me on Gilles came from Keke Rosberg, saying: Gilles was the hardest bastard I ever raced against, hard but absolutely fair. If you beat him into a corner, he would never close the door or come down on you, Gilles was a giant of a driver. I agree 100%, he never did any Schumacher dirty tricks, Gilles is legend, Schumacher never.

Not entirely true. In his later years, Gilles very much matured as a driver. in Monaco 81, he drove a very smart race, he paced himself, and when his time was right, he gave it his fullest. People underestimate how tactical and calculated his victory was. In Jarama, he drove flat out all the way, with a car that handled like a shopping cart. He could do both, and that is what counts to be a great driver. Today you'd be fined and penalized for blocking, possibly even black flagged.

Senna, Schumi, Gilles, Moss, Fangio. All brave drivers. They had their faults. It is very difficult to compare drivers from another era. The sport changes, so do the ethics of the sport, wether you like it or not. Although, I am a great Ferrari fan,but I must say I was very happy when Schumi did not succeed in pushing Jacques Villeneuve off at Jerez in '97.

Quit having a go on Schumi. Gilles is a good drivers so is Schumi. Schumi had one accusation of cheating the 1997 European grand prix against Jacques. IF HE DID ANYTHING ELSE WRONG THE FIA WOULD HAVE TOLD HIM OFF. Gilles is brilliants so is Schumi. You hate him because people who have had the most glory can be hated because of jealousy.
