more homemade cymbals.

The cymbals are made from sheet brass. The brass sheets (1,5 mm thick, available in metal stores, but buy bronze if you can)are cut out, warmed up until they get coloured then instantly dropped into cold water. this procedure makes the metal softer, so it wont break in the next step.

Next step is hammering on a wooden log, by hiting one side with a hammer that has ball-shaped head. This way you get the overall shape of a cymbal. Now you can hammer it on a metal or harder surface, in order to get the metal thinner, and more dense.

By hammering from the other (top) side, the metal also becomes more dense, and thats what you need to achieve, one piece of dense metal.

Hand hammering is a very hard work, and needs patience. You need to hammer it by smaller hits from the middle towards the edges, maintaining the same distances, and same power, othervise the plates will get a 8 shape and bend. First try with a smaller diameter. (under 8")

When youre done, you can lathe them, if you have the equipment, but it is not very improtant. by making the plate thinner, it becomes more sensitive(and breaks more easily)

Drill the hole, after all is done!

when tis is all done, post it on youtube :)

  • Did you take the inspiration to make these cymbals or chimes, whatever, from Gavin Harrison ?

  • @DrumsofEternity No. My father worked with sheet brass, he is a sculptor. I played the drums. so it was obivious to try.

  • where did you get those? I love the way they sound? did you make them out of a ride cymbal or something?

  • @drummersabu read description.

  • how loud are they?

  • @MrGuitarhero432 pretty loud, in fact a bit too loud
