For Iranians there is nothing unusual in banning Facebook except for sensitive timing. Muzzle the opposition and obstruct the mobilization of Iranian youth through Facebook. The reformist Presidential candidates are using new media technology to reach out to their young voters to unseat current conservative President. The development of new media technology and its is adoption by a large number of people 21m people out of a population of 70m have access to the internet has made blogs and web sites such as Facebook an important campaign tool for the reformist candidate hoping a swing in June 12 balloting. Mr Moussavis supporters have been using Facebook to encourage other Iranians to vote for him, and to unseat President Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad. Besides facebook is the only independent source that both the Iranian youth and reformists can use to communicate with the state media tightly under the grip of ruling incumbent President Ahmedinejad.

  • i don't think you're understanding... you can still use facebook in Iran by way of proxy servers based out of China when the government bans the website.... but facebook isn't always banned in Iran... the regime uses this censorship to suppress political anti-government mobilization...

it s not like democrats or dictators come n use facebook to share ideas !!

so again, facebook has got nothin to do with the elections..

blockin or allowing it, wouldnt change anything about who the president would or would not be..

yes its a place for ppl to gather their ideas .. but hey, have u noticed that most these ppl are actually just using facebook to lets say chat, make frends, use different fun applications such as ''who has got the highest IQ'' or ''how girly am i'' or playing ''poker'' n this sort of stuff.. n this infact can be very time wasting sometimes..

  • it's a place where ppl can gather their ideas and find out that they're not alone, the opposite of what a dictatorship wants

  • Its a very affective tool for passing information that is suppressed by the unelected rulers of the country, it allows people to show their pain an suffering in the pursuit of freedom and democracy, this in turn allows us to understand what is going on the the region and offer help and support as and where we can. Facebook, along with youtube are the new media tools for the people or Iran to show the world what is really going on and deliberately hidden from us.
