Jefferson sought to follow the principles that Jesus spoke about in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. You aren't the only person who, staying so far away from religion as to not being able to see its moving parts, mistakes religion for dogma.

Jefferson said Jesus was a "moral" man but he rejected him as being divine or supernatural, made his own Bible with just the new testament, stripped line from line of any reference to magic or divinity, and said that "And the day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerve in the brain of Jupiter." which doesn't sound particularly pious to me honestly..
