You aren't a tank, don't go into melee range. Every heal that needs to go on you because you're in melee is one less heal that could be used on someone effective in hand to hand combat.
Avoid using 'tracking' spells, ie spells that show which direction you are attacking from.
Fireball is ineffective. If you have time to cast fireball you have time to cast your aoe fireball.
Finally, constantly move, it helps you avoid being focus fired.

I try not to go into melee range if I can avoid it. The front bit at the gate was something of a "special case." That was the only time I -purposefully- got in melee range, and it was to pick up their standard.
Note: Fireball is generally used only when they're out of range for fiery blast. And 1300 crits are nothing to turn up a nose at. xP
