The Boer Wars was the name given to the South African Wars of 1880-1 and 1899-1902, that were fought between the British and the descendants of the Dutch settlers (Boers) in Africa. After the first Boer War William Gladstone granted the Boers self-government in the Transvaal.

The Boers, under the leadership of Paul Kruger, resented the colonial policy of Joseph Chamberlain and Alfred Milner which they feared would deprive the Transvaal of its independence. After receiving military equipment from Germany, the Boers had a series of successes on the borders of Cape Colony and Natal between October 1899 and January 1900. Although the Boers only had 88,000 soldiers, led by the outstanding soldiers such as Louis Botha, and Jan Smuts, the Boers were able to successfully besiege the British garrisons at Ladysmith, Mafeking and Kimberley.

Army reinforcements arrived in South Africa in 1900 and counter-offences relieved the garrisons and enabled the British to take control of the Boer capital, Pretoria, on 5th June. For the next two years groups of Boer commandos raided isolated British units in South Africa. Lord Kitchener, the Chief of Staff in South Africa, reacted to this by destroying Boer farms and moving civilians into concentration camps.

The British action in South Africa was strongly opposed by many leading Liberal politicians and most of the Independent Labour Party as an example of the worst excesses of imperialism. The Boer War ended with the signing of the Treaty of Vereeniging in May 1902. The peace settlement brought to an end the Transvaal and the Orange Free State as Boer republics. However, the British granted the Boers £3 million for restocking and repairing farm lands and promised eventual self-government (granted in 1907).

  • No, i said proud of BOERE HEROES, cant u read? You assume they were slave traders and colonisers and murderers you poor little emotional child. Go do you homework properly then you wont make a complete ass of yourself you fucking racist. If i were you i would delete your little post you insignificunt little insect. Kill myself? What a pathetic amoral shit for brains you are. I see we have much of a chip on that shoulder of urs. Here is some advice: Get an education! Now FUCK OFF!

  • The fact is today not even the so called "Afrikaners" is in control anymore.I have been following your comments for a while now and although i agree with a lot of what u say, i do not agree with everything and need to verify it for myself. I am Afrikaans speaking and grew up with stories of Boere heroes of which i am proud of. However even if there truly is a difference between Afrikaners and Boere we cant afford to be divided. If u r Afrikaans, proud of the boere heroes, its good enough for me.

  • Our white South Africans emigrate to another country's now, but i believe one day we will all stand together as one, there is a reason of all things. history repeats itself and always will be, SOUTH AFRICANS is going to be kept in the dark for a long time but only time will tel, but when we come out of the dark we will be stronger then ever we as the White South Africans should just never stop believing. I LOVE MY COUNTRY

  • @blueskyes 111 As a white South African I am always fascinated how Europeans always see the whites in South Africa as the only ones that stole land. You conveniently forgot the fact that black tribes migrated into southern africa in about the 7th century AD. And they themselves then displaced / butchered another group of people, the Khoisan or Bushman people. Who for your information, are Kapoid people. They are a different race to the blacks. Another case of selective morality

  • Good peace of History.

  • This Blueskyes propagandist is at it again because there were no Boers [ not Afrikaners ] in Europe until they developed on African soil. The Boers ARE natives to the region. The Bantus displaced the aboriginal Khoisan peoples but no mention of that as per usual. The British in fact killed off 50 % of the Boer child population in the concentration camps they set up during the second Anglo-Boer War. A war fought in the Boer Republics. No matter how one would paint it: the Boers were victimized.

  • Fact is,is that Afrikaners came from Europe and ended up in South Africa, displacing natives, stealing their land and their cattle and then painting a picture that THEY are the victims of their british european cousins. The Boer war was a european war fought in someone elses country/land by europeans themselves.I have no sympathy for boer afrikaaners.

  • No mention of land stolen from indigenous Khoisan and Black people by the Afrikaners.

  • This video is typical Afrikaner propaganda.

  • Just wanted to point out that the latest post at my blog outlines & demonstrates why it is quite dangerous for the smaller Boers to refer to themselves as Afrikaners as it forces them under Afrikaner domination [ as Theuns Cloete pointed out ] & Boers would be under the control of Cape Dutch descended agenda. Furthermore: part of the description to this video is wrong as the Boers have very little actual Dutch roots as they are descended from German / Frisian / Danish & French Huguenot folk.

  • Though I would caution Boer descendents against doing such as it automatically makes them a minority within the Afrikaner designation which was historically detrimental to Boer aspirations & continues to be so because when Boers allow themselves to be called Afrikaners as well: it cedes their natural sovereignty over to the Cape Dutch descendents whose leadership works hard at suppressing the Boer Nation.
