This video is taken from Singapore, where the full eclipse was visible. As this is only a partial lunar eclipse, only a small portion of the moon's southern limb is fully obscured by the Earth's umbra.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes in between the moon and the Sun, blocking a certain amount of sunlight from falling on the moon. This causes a darkening of the moon's disc, in which we view from Earth as a lunar eclipse. A solar eclipse, however, occurs when the opposite happens: The moon goes in between the moon and the sun. This results in a fall in sunlight hitting the terrestrial surface, and shows up as a dark circle (moon) overlapping a white circle (sun) when viewed with proper filters.

A blue moon (second full moon in the same month) that occurs on New Year's eve happens only once every 19 years. A lunar eclipse (i.e. Earth blocks the moon from the sun) that occurs on a blue moon during New Year's eve happens only once every 98 years, proving to be a rare event indeed. On 31 December 2009 (or 1 January 2010 in other parts of the world), viewers in Asia, Europe and Africa were able to view this rare event.

Enjoy.

  • is this when the sun is in front of the moon or sumthin? "stupid question"

  • @Menddraeda

This happens when the Earth blocks Sunlight from hitting the moon. In other words this happens when the Earth in in the middle of the moon and the sun. That's why all lunar eclipses happen during the time of the full moon.
