What's wrong with this picture? Americans do not bow to royalty. In my view, when the royal is the ruling tyrant of a despotic regime, the wrong is compounded. Putting aside the breach of American protocol, it is akin to Jimmy Carter succumbing to Brezhnev's infamous kiss at the signing of the arms accord in Vienna in 1979. It is a disgrace. As in Carter's case, Obama's supplicant attitude signifies his spirit. In this respect I distinguish it from George Bush's otherwise embarrasing handholding with the the king.

the worst amateur moment thus far in the Obama presidency came when the President of the United States executed a bow to a monarch so deep that he literally had to take a step back to balance himself. Not just any monarch, either, but one of the most repressive among those nations friendly to the US. Interestingly, this came just after Barack Obama met with another monarch, and the contrast between Barack Obamas show of respect is striking.

Indeed. And President Obama shouldnt have bowed to the Saudi monarch, either. No American President should ever make such an obsequious display to any monarch — ever.

It wasnt a bow, exactly. But Mr. Clinton came close. He inclined his head and shoulders forward, he pressed his hands together. It lasted no longer than a snapshot, but the image on the South Lawn was indelible: an obsequent President, and the Emperor of Japan.

When will the New York Times cover this, even to the extent they covered Clintons inclined shoulders? Or is the unthinkable in 1994 turned into the unmentionable in 2009, thanks to a national media that has completely sold out to Barack Obama?

Its called respect!! A courteous gesture to think they gave us a lot of things that we have in the US from Cars, Spareparts and Electronics and allowing us to maintain the bases in Okinawa and other parts! What do we give them? Toxic waste and rape cases and yeah US beef that most of them protested not to land on their markets! Just be respectful so others will respect us!

yahya, I don't know where you came from, but this is a forum for the expression of ideas. We are free to speak our minds in the USA, so how dare you tell anybody to "shat their nagitive mouth". Censorship is what they do in Saudi Arabia....not here.
