"Taking a Chance on Love" written by Vernon Duke, John Latouche and Ted Fetter, in 1940 for the Broadway musical, Cabin in the Sky, was recorded by the Benny Goodman Orchestra in 1940 with Cootie Williams on trumpet, vocalist Helen Forrest, and Fletcher Henderson's arrangement but was not a success until 1943 after the release of the film version of the show. The recording spent 14 weeks on the pop charts, including three weeks in first place.

  • I've heard many arrangements of this great tune, but this is by far the best... Always loved Hellen forest.. One of the best big band singers.

  • @Vevey2004 I think that she was the best female big band singer.

  • Great song and wonderful Benny Goodman and Helen Forrest vocal.

Other great vocals for this song by Ethel Waters and Barbra Streisand.

I think the song is from the musical CABIN IN THE SKY, if I'm not mistaken/

  • @albertdiner

  • Amen! to catman's extravagant, though much deserved, praise of Helen Forrest. It can't be coincidence that so many bands wanted her.

  • Thanks for the upload! Great song! :)

  • @roughman998

Allmost forgot...Or Helen O'Connell, or Loretta Lee, or Billie Hoolliday, or June Christy, or Margaret Whiting, or Martha Tilten, or Peggy Lee, or Vera Lynn...

    (Consulted my iTunes liibrary!)

  • @catman916 Yup. I agree.

Except for when I listen to Bea Wayne, or Ella Mae Morse, or Ella Fitzgerald, or The Boswell Sisters, or The Andrews Sisters or Mildred Baily, or or Dorris Day, or Eddie Gormay...

Then, I think THEY were the best...

  • perfect for this hot hazy humid evening in chicago.

  • i believe this is an alternate take !!

  • you are not mistaken, Ethal Waters sings it in the film Cabin in the Sky

  • ah, swing and the big band jazz era, still my absolute favorite era of music.
