Where St Petersburg was founded on 27 May 1703. In its time it was a fort that never fought and a prison for political dissidents. Today it is today best-known as the burial place of the Imperial family - the Romanovs, including the tragic last Tsar Nicholas II. On 3 June 2010 the last Romanov born before the Revolution was laid to rest in the grounds of the cathedral. (4 June 2010)

  • Dr Botkin's murder has an added poignancy. He elected to stay with the Imperial Family after their arrest and during their imprisonment, when as a physician with a scarce and highly-valued skill he could have walked away at any time. That he was fully aware of the consequences of his choice is very evident in blessOTMA's excellent video 'Dr. Botkin's last letter.'

  • The 4 members of the Imperial Family's entourage, executed with them in 1918, were their physician Dr Evgeny Sergeievitch Botkin, the Empress’ lady-in-waiting Anna Stepanovna Demidova, the Emperor’s footman Aloysius Egorovitch Trupp and the family’s cook Ivan Mihailovich Kharitonov.

They too are buried in the side chapel of the cathedral. All 9 victims of the atrocity were canonized in 1981 as martyrs by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, victims of Soviet oppression.
