This was once the tower of St Martins Church. The church was demolished in 1900 to make more room for traffic. The tower is now a landmark of Oxford and is considered to be the centre of the city. It's open during the day for people to climb to view Oxford from a height, for a charge.
There are six bells in the tower with a 15cwt tenor. They were cast in 1676 by Richard Keene of Woodstock, and hang in a frame made by Taylors in 1899.
Carfax tower has an unusual clock chime which can be heard elswhere on YouTube. It also has two quarter jacks on the side of the tower below the clock dial.
I was priveliged to be invited to join the Oxford Society of Change Ringers as they spent the afternoon ringing at a variety of colleges and churches through Oxford, to herald the wedding of HRH Prince William of Wales and Miss Catherine Middleton, now Dike and Duchess of Cambridge. It has been a joy to see and hear of all the ringing that has taken place for this happy occasion.

  • I love the fact that no one has noticed that I fell over at the beginning of the video!

  • how often do they ring there?

  • @1235train I think the ringing here is, apart from ringing outings, on special occasions or quarter peals.

  • Saw this tower on Sunday... wanted a ring, but there wasnt any... if only there were 6 of me!! I got a quick grab (or "collect" as Mr Moulder likes to remind me :) ) at the Cathedral before they attempted a peal (lost 2 hours in!!)

  • @anonmonen Yes, I suppose you could say I am headed on the downward slope there...

But it's NOT about number crunching, I just enjoy the variety. And I can remember something about each and every tower I have rung at - all 185 of them!!

  • @simonbellringer

I think it was a description of us as survivors because over the day there was a fair few more people who rang with us at various towers, who were all Oxford based so I don't think Merton would scare them in the least bit. They smply only came for part of the day, had quarter peal attempts in other places or just stayed in the pub...

  • @irkibby Gathered...

Btw, loved the way that the photo of you Oxford lot on Campanophile described you as SURVIVORS!!! What did you do to the rest? Scare 'em to death at Merton? Mind, Id love to go there myself though...!!

  • @simonbellringer

Oh Aaron is a windup merchant :)

  • @anonmonen Huh!! I just enjoy going to different & new towers, Im not particularly bothered by how many I have!! Although 160 in less than 6 years isnt bad for someone who can't drive!! And 4 of those were Australian Towers!!

  • @simonbellringer Dirty Rotton Glazed Eyed Tower Grabber!!! Lol
