Moving onto Taiwan, where pro-independence protesters sit in front of Taiwan's legislature to protest a visiting Chinese Communist Party official. He's in Taiwan to discuss details of improved cross-strait economic ties.

STORY:
Taiwan's main opposition party, concerned that Taiwan is getting too close to China, kicked off a three-day protest sit-in today.
That's after more than 3,000 people sat in front of Taiwan's legislature on Monday evening protesting the arrival of China's top negotiator for cross-strait relations.

The opposition, in power from 2000 to 2008, advocated independence from China and did not negotiate with Beijing.

[Mrs. Liao, Protester]:
"I think they should set rules to clearly define that Taiwan is Taiwan, and China is China, totally unrelated. We don't want to be ruled by them, if that happens people will stand up against them regardless of gender and profession."

With heightened security in the city during the Chinese official's visit, protesters express concern their freedoms would be curtailed in favour of improved Taiwan-China relations.

[Shiao-shun, Protestor]:
"Only one official comes to visit, our freedom is already so much restricted, we cannot imagine what will happen next. Now they open up for Chinese credentials and Chinese investment while the two countries are still hostile, more than a thousand missiles are still aimed at us, how can we trust the government?."

Chen Yunlin, the top Chinese negotiator who began China's first high-level visit to political rival Taiwan in 60 years will pursue agreements on direct flights, food safety and the economy despite protests against warming ties.
Chen is the highest-level Chinese official to set foot on the island since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949.

Working groups from China and Taiwan tentatively agreed on Monday to sign agreements that would allow 108 direct flights per week between the two countries.

Also on the table for Tuesday are new postal links and a process for quick notification and investigation of any contaminated food following Taiwan's concern over tainted dairy products from China.

  • In the long campaign between Taiwan and China, democratic Taiwan is destined to win because of the values it stands for.

China, you need to CHANGE! Throw away despotic communism. Yes, you can!

  • Are you on drugs? Or do you just believe what the CCP tells you? Taiwan has its own government, its own president, its own army and its own money. The government is elected directly by the people and is not appointed by Beijing. It is, in fact, a multi-party system, nominally with four parties but with only two that have ever gained power, the KMT (Guomingdang) and the DDP. The protests are againsts the ongoing threats against Taiwan sovereignty, including the 700 missiles aimed at them.

  • @russenbaer It has nothing to do with 'values' or anything like that. Besides, Communism has never been achieved. Not in China.

  • no we dont considered ourselves chinese, learn the truth before you say something.

  • Taiwan is indeed doing fine without china... Taiwan is Taiwan and China is china... The chinese ppl won't accept the fact that Taiwan is independent democratic because they're just a selfish. Taiwanese dislike communist

  • every since Taipei 101 was built, Youtubers that are Chinese say "Taiwan is China, so SEE LOOK WE ARE SOO MODERN!"

im serious, plus Taiwan would be a nice cute island country! why make it a insignificant "province"? then my Japanese friends cant come anymore!

  • im chinesee but i believe that taiwan should be a separate country because it kind of already is and this issue has been argued for a long time already and seriously needs to stop for it is useless.

i think taiwan is doing well without chinaa and china can survive without taiwan. britain is doing well without america now.

but im not sure that the communism government well change in china anytime soon but the society chinese people are leaving in is NOT communist.

  • Bitch! how many time I have to tell you, I am Taiwanese NOT Chinese

  • martinphipps2:

could you explain to me why china has 700 missiles aimed at taiwan? i never understood why...

  • wow, the anchor is messed up. Taiwan isn't signing a traty with the CCP, it's signing a treaty with China, which Taiwan is a part of... This is so ironic and absurd that I laugh at it

  • Taiwan isn't a province of China, in 1949 ROC moved to Taiwan therefore making it a separate country
