1,300 exhibitors from more than 60 countries are participating in the worlds biggest arms show, now taking place in Londons Docklands.

Some 26 thousand people from the armed forces, government and business are expected to visit the Defense Systems and Equipment International Exhibition, which takes place every two years.

A visual highlight is the James Bond-style XSR interceptor, pursuit and patrol vessel, capable of speeds up to 97 mph.

The vessel can be armed with machine guns and canon and is designed to foil piracy at sea.

A broad range of land-based equipment is also on display, ranging from new bomb proof armored vehicles to remote controlled bomb disposal robots and new water purification devices.

[Paul Beaver, Defense Analyst]:
"I think the predominant theme of the show this year is about force protection, and that means vehicles and systems that keep soldiers safe in theatre and of course for just about everybody here. Out of the 62 nations that are exhibiting, 42 of them are involved in Afghanistan. So its very much Afghanistan focused and keeping soldiers safe.

Ranger is a heavily armored vehicle, which is a completely new design regarding the use of armor.

[Paul Beaver, Defense Analyst]:
There's a vehicle that you can see over my shoulder called the 'Ranger', which is a completely new design in terms of having an armored vehicle. You don't put armour on the outside, it's already got armor on the inside.

Innovative remote bomb disposal vehicles to reduce human casualities were also on display.

[John Montgomery, Bomb Disposal Expert Warrant Officer, British Army]:
Certainly with regards to sending a man down in a bomb suit to deal with a device, it's much better to send a remotely operated vehicle should the unthinkable happen, then the ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) will be destroyed and not the operator.

Medics displayed new ways of treating wounded soldiers in the field, aimed at evacuating the injured to a medical facility within one hour.

The exhibition runs until September 11.

  • I imagine they never have a good time......mighty stressful career path they are on. I don't think they are too concerned about retirement benefits ;-)

  • A wonderful time is guaranteed for all in merry old London. Or at least a huge pile of loot if you have a new and innovative way to mass kill your fellow man.
