As a proud IU alum from the Knight years I can say that Bobby Knight is still raging egomaniac and an embarrassment to IU. He was a great coach until the early 80s but the game and its players passed him by because he was utterly unadaptable and stuck in his own self-righteous worldview and the past. He's a contemptible man who is a part of history but has little relevance to the game as it's played today. Any Power Five team would crush the vaunted 70s teams today.

IU fan here. Bob Knight is one of the greatest coaches ever. That has nothing to do with personality or popularity. He's just good at coaching basketball.
Coach K is a great coach (he played for Knight at Army and was an Asst. under him at Indiana btw) and a really nice guy. But honestly, Bob Knight is the better coach between the two. He racked up his wins in a shorter time than Krzyzewski, and with a worse team (TTech) to end his career.

I often wonder if Knight would have ruined Larry Bird. I saw Knight ruin a couple players when I was a student at IU in the mid-80s. He just abused these two players, really fucked them up. Bird was recruited by Knight and enrolled at IU to play ball for him, but Bird left school before practice began. Some have speculated that Bird didn't want to play for Knight because Knight would have restricted his free flowing game of passing and shooting. I think this is true. Knight ruined Ricky Ca
