Because if He was a normal man (i.e., NOT God), then He wouldn't have been perfect & without sin. Therefore, not able to die & pay the price for all the sins of man. Romans 3:23 says for all have sinned & fall short of the glory of God. It doesn't say all humans except Jesus. That was the whole purpose of the crucifixion.

Is that an algebra of sins, penalties and gods? I'm so not getting into an argument with that... Apart from that, I see no reason why a son of God could not forgive sins, be resurected and/or prove victory over death...

The most important reason that Jesus has to be God is that if He is not God, His death would not have been sufficient to pay the penalty for the sins of the world (1 John 2:2). A created being, which Jesus would be if He were not God, could not pay the infinite penalty required for sin against an infinite God. Only God could pay such an infinite penalty. Only God could take on the sins of the world (2 Corinthians 5:21), die, and be resurrected, proving His victory over sin and death.

I've seen the list of verses where Jesus supposedly says he's God before and now again, but I remain unconvinced. It all relies too much on particular interpretation and/or particular translation and sometimes the verses are taken out of context...

Something other than the fact that Jesus actually SAID He was God several times, you mean?

Well yes, a son could be a nobody, but I believe that's not the case with Jesus, he seems to have a pretty close relationship with God... I don't know the exact nature of that relationship (we might even be unable to understand), but I'm not going to believe in a monoteistic deity in multiplte persons unless there'd be a very very good reasoning for that...

Well, being the son of God is like being the son of anything else if He's not God, Himself. You can be the son of a singer and not be able to carry a tune, or the son of a millionaire and be flat broke and homeless. You say you doubt the bible is divinely inspired, so how could a man, who is NOT God, know anything about his father, who HE claims and WE believe is obviously not from this earth?

But how can you say His teachings or your feelings/experiences are correct as they pertain to the hereafter or anything else?
