Understanding Culture and Race

This course explores how culture shapes both the student and the educator.
Participants learn to interpret, understand, and incorporate culture into the educational setting.
They learn to navigate and preclude misunderstandings and misinterpretations that can spring from
incongruence between a school's or teacher's culture and the student's. The course includes a unit
on how culture shock can affect a teacher's interpretations of behavior, discipline decisions, and
assessment of a student's ability to learn.
