My daughters 8/9th grade hybrid math class in NYC uses the Singapore and the Saxon Math system. The Singapore system uses visual aides, it helps a lot with word problems which many students struggle with. Then when the switch to Saxon Math happens it is not such a shock because they can visualize the word problem first. I feel Singapore math helped tremendously to develop her abstract thinking. I like that both systems are used because all districts do not use the Singapore system.

They just started using this where I'm from and all it's doing with the kids is confusing them. I was taught basic math in school and I undersand it far better than this stuff. My parents and I can't help my younger brother's and sister's because even we don't understand it. My aunt graduated with a teaching degree and she can't help either. What the crap are we suppose to do when their grades drop?

wait... america doesnt know model, or doesnt teach ??? they dont even allow us to use it Secondary school !!

@camperinCod43 Actually model drawing helped me visualise the no.s especially in word problems in primary school. Especially PSLE :) So... when algebra came around I was able to take it on much easier.

This is complete bullshite, in PSLE , they cut down algebra to the basics and force down this stupid heuristics. So what can be solved by Algebra is not taught and kids are forced to use convoluted methods to solved what essentially could be solved by algebra. in their eureka moment, they decided to push this thru with disastrous effects.
Theintellectually dishonest math teachers community then supports this and spawns a huge industry from tuition to books and workshops. DEGENERATE.

Wow... I didn't know Singapore method of teaching Mathematics is so well recognised in the US. I'm proud of Singapore but I hope MOE can reduce the workload of our teachers.
