A collection of TV news recorded in NYC in August, 1991.

An unsuccessful military coup that attempted to remove Gorbachev from power instead led to the collapse of the Soviet Union. Boris Yeltsin came to power and declared the end of exclusive Communist rule. The USSR splintered into fifteen independent republics, and was officially dissolved.

Very miserable? The USSR was not Zimbabwe. I know the soviet economy was very inefficient, but the people did not starve to death. Sure they had to wait in lines for basic things, but that is because the soviet bureaucracy did not cared about consumer products. The bureaucracy failed to produce consumer products because the workers are not allowed to participate. The USSR was not communist, it was Stalinist, a bureaucracy that ruled over the people in the name of Marx and Lenin.

  • Russia - Not free Ukraine - Free Belarus - Not free Turkmenistan - Not free Uzbekistan - Not free Kazakhstan - Not free Azerbaijan - Not free Kyrgyzstan - Not free Armenia - Partly free Georgia - Partly free Estonia - Free Latvia - Free Lithuania - Free Moldova - Partly free So many ex soviet states remain dictatorships or are states were the government is not fully democratic. Only the Baltic nations and Ukraine made good democratic progress. But Russia remains a dictatorship.
  • Stalinism died in 1990. Capitalism used that and spread anticommunism in the USSR. People were led to believe that the soviet communist party was genuine Marxist and that Marxism is totalitarian and anti-democratic.

The people believed the lies of the right-wing nationalists and supporters of capitalism. But look at those soviet republics today. Russia is a capitalist dictatorship and most soviet republics remain authoritarian and are not free.

Stalinism lead to the return of capitalism.
